USD 420 High School Athletic/Activities Director

Job Description

 

Reports To: High School Principal & Superintendent

 

Supervises: Coaches, Sponsors, and Student Participants

 

Evaluation: High School Principal

 

Purpose: The Athletic/Activities director promotes an appreciation of participation, physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The Athletic/Activities director coordinates school activities to avoid scheduling conflicts and ensure rewarding experiences for students. To accomplish these tasks the Activities Director must work closely with the staff, administration, and with the staff of other school systems.

 

Qualifications:

Certified Teacher or Administrator

Must possess a valid Kansas teaching certificate or have ASEP Certification.

Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office.

Have a valid driver's license, be able to drive, and qualify under the district’s insurance carrier when driving a district vehicle.

Desire to continue career improvement.

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Secure calendar dates for all school activities and clear at all levels before submitting for approval.
  2. Keep abreast of current regulations in the KSHSAA manual. Ensure that all school activities conform to KSHSAA guidelines.
  3. Submit all KSHSAA forms (Including eligibility sheets, contracts for events, contracts for officials, submit purchase orders for entry fees, etc.)
  4. Schedule and secure contracts for all activities.
  5. Secure officials for all events and seek approval of all coaches.
  6. Supervise home and away activities as needed.
  7. Work with sponsors and coaches in setting up activity budgets and establishing priority items to be ordered and submit budgets and purchase order for approval.
  8. Assist coaches and/or teachers in setting up school hosted activities.
  9. Assign staff for management of home activity events, and bus sponsors for pep buses.
  10. Work with counselors to make sure participating students are eligible to participate.
  11. Submit purchase orders for school awards for all activities.
  12. Keep the Principal and sponsors informed of dates and locations for activities sponsored by KSHSAA.
  13. Secure transportation requests for all events, check school calendar for conflicts, check leaving and return times and special needs before submitting to the principal.
  14. Check rosters from visiting school athletic teams and provide program information for activities.
  15. Coordinate and supervise activities at district, league, state, and other levels.
  16. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  17. Work effectively with booster clubs and other community organizations.
  18. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  19. Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery related to specific job duties.
  20. Support the value of an education.
  21. Encourage potential athletes and students to participate in athletics and activities.
  22. Assist coaches in developing team rules, communicating them to the players and their parents.
  23. Develop positive relations with students and parents. This includes proper dress, language, demeanor, and student/teacher relations. Conference with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their student athlete.
  24. Act as a school representative and promote the school by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
  25. Participate in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, homecoming, King and Queen of courts, plays, musical, forensic, quiz bowl, KAYS, STUCO, NHS, and pep assemblies.
  26. Model positive sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, opposing team and staff, and spectators.
  27. See that district policies are observed during all activities.
  28. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
  29. Establish and maintain standards of pupil and fan behavior and always provide proper supervision of athletics and activities.
  30. Maintain a conducive and safe environment free from bullying, hazing etc.
  31. Maintain eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, timecards, and other related records.
  32. Ensure that student athletes meet eligibility rules.
  33. Ensure that physical evaluation forms and permission forms are properly completed and filed before athletes are allowed to practice.
  34. Ensure that coaches and sponsors adhere to training rules, lettering policies, grade requirements, and rules of behavior.
  35. Ensure that health and safety precautions are observed during all activities.
  36. Attend Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) rules meetings, and adhere to rules and regulations of KSHSAA and the Flint Hills League.
  37. Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  38. Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  39. Work with coaches to ensure proper purchasing, inventory, and care of equipment. Help them maintain, issue, and provide an accurate inventory of school equipment and uniforms before and at the end of the season.
  40. Obtain advance approval of the principal for all activities and expenditures.
  41. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  42. Support the philosophy and vision of U.S.D. 420.
  43. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  1. Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  2. To model the skills of the sport (bending, running, jumping, twisting and lifting).
  3. Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  4. Requires some travel.
  5. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  6. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
